Fluorination of Packaging
In many areas such as the automotive industry, construction materials, medical technology, or industrial cleaning, the surface of the selected plastic packaging is not sufficient for its intended use. Here, an improvement of surface and barrier properties by fluorination is possible.
During fluorination, the surface of the plastic parts is exposed to a fluorine-containing mixture. Due to its high reactivity, fluorine partially replaces hydrogen atoms at the material surface and forms barrier layers against non-polar substances. The surface-near layers are modified, but the material remains unchanged in its fundamental properties.
Thus, the barrier layers on the inside and outside of packaging significantly reduce the diffusion/permeability of gases (permeation) — such as solvents, organic solutions, glycerin and gasoline.
Other advantages of fluorination:
- Excellent adhesion properties
- Environmental burden from odors and vapors is reduced
- Higher print quality, due to better adhesion
