Climate protection

Our path to the ClimatePartner-certified company

It is our declared goal to continuously reduce the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions that arise from Rixius's business activities.

To contribute to climate protection and to be able to neutralize our CO₂ emissions, we joined forces with ClimatePartner and together calculated the company's CO₂ footprint: the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF).

The CCF is the sum of the CO₂ emissions that the company has caused within the defined system boundaries in a defined period. The calculation was performed in accordance with the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (GHG Protocol).

Calculate, reduce, offset – this is essential for climate protection in line with the Paris Agreement.

STEP 1 - CALCULATION

For the most precise calculation, we have captured the CO2 emissions of our company together with ClimatePartner. For this purpose, the various emission sources, in accordance with the GHG Protocol, were divided into three areas (scopes): Scope 1 contains all emissions directly generated by Rixius GmbH, for example through company-owned facilities or fleets. Scope 2 accounts for emissions arising from purchased energy, for example electricity and district heating. Scope 3 includes all remaining emissions that are not under direct corporate control, such as employees' commuting or the disposal of the product.

STEP 2 - AVOIDANCE & REDUCTION

Based on the Corporate Carbon Footprint we see where we can further reduce CO2. Of course this is updated regularly so that we can implement adjustments. Previous reduction measures:

  • Gradual conversion of the fleet to electric cars or plug-in hybrids
  • We use renewable energy to charge our fleet and electric forklifts
  • Ongoing optimization of the routes of our electric forklifts
  • Job bike offer for all employees
  • Increase of mobile working capabilities
  • Reduction of paper consumption with the goal of a paperless office

STEP 3 - OFFSET

Greenhouse gases such as CO₂ are distributed evenly in the atmosphere. The concentration of greenhouse gases is therefore similarly high everywhere on Earth. Therefore, for the global concentration of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect, it makes no difference where on Earth emissions are emitted—or avoided.

Emissions that cannot yet be avoided today by Berlin Packaging Rixius GmbH can thus be offset through climate protection projects at another location.

"Easy Green" - We reduce our CO₂ emissions

We are pleased to announce that our company will source a total of 354 MWh of green electricity from 100% renewable energy sources in 2024. By using MVV Energie's "Easy Green," we are making an active contribution to protecting our climate and reducing CO₂ emissions. The official certificate confirms our commitment to a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply. Together, we are working toward a greener future!

Together for tomorrow – Our commitment to climate protection

Overview of successful climate protection projects:

Active Ocean Protection - "Stop the Plastic Flood"

The ocean is one of our most important life-supporting resources: It stores CO₂, absorbs heat, and has always served as a natural protection against climate change. But pollution, contaminants and overfishing are increasingly harming this delicate system.

Through our Climate Partnership we support the project "Stop the Plastic Flood," which reduces the entry of plastic into the seas. In Haiti, Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines, people collect plastic waste and exchange it at collection points for money, food, drinking water or school fees.

The collected material is processed into "Social Plastic" – a valuable raw material for new products like packaging. This means less waste ends up in the sea, while at the same time a sustainable circular economy is created that strengthens both the environment and people alike.

Protection of forests - regional & international

With this project we support certified climate protection measures and at the same time strengthen nature conservation in Germany. For every ton of CO₂ saved, a grant is allocated to Bergwaldprojekt e.V. in Freiburg – for forest care, biotope protection and the preservation of young trees.

The Freiburg nature conservation project is combined with a solar project in India, which generates renewable energy and reduces further emissions. In this way we connect global climate protection impact with regional engagement.

The measures include the conversion and protection of native forests, the promotion of biodiversity, peatland renaturation and the upgrading of agricultural land – so that natural habitats can continue to exist in the future.

Climate- & Nature Conservation in the Allgäu

As with the Freiburg project, this is also a combined project with a certified solar project in India, which enables additional CO₂ savings through solar energy.

The funding generated there flows entirely into the Bergwaldprojekt in the Oberallgäu. There, one of the last intact Central European biotopes is protected – habitat for threatened species such as capercaillie and black grouse. Young trees are protected from browsing and native species such as European silver fir and sycamore maple are planted to promote stable montane mixed forests and greater biodiversity.
