C-Program at Berlin Packaging | Rixius
With the C-Program, we organize a regional take-back and recycling initiative for selected plastic packaging made of HDPE and PP.
The aim of the program is to collect suitable plastic packaging made from these materials separately after use, consolidate it and transfer it to our recycling partners for further processing. There, the materials can be further processed into regranulate, depending on material type, cleanliness, sorting and technical suitability.
This regranulate can be used for new plastic applications, depending on material quality and technical requirements. The use of regranulate can reduce the need for newly produced plastic, provided that it replaces virgin material in production.
The specific environmental impact depends, among other factors, on material quality, processing, transport routes, area of application and the actual reuse of the material. Reliable statements on energy or CO₂ effects require a product- or process-specific calculation with clearly defined system boundaries, methodology and comparison basis.
The Current Situation in Plastics Recycling
Plastic is a versatile material that is used in many packaging applications. It offers functional properties such as low weight, dimensional stability, break resistance and flexible design options.
Which packaging solution is suitable in each individual case depends on various factors: filling product, product protection, packaging weight, transport, reuse, recyclability and the available collection and sorting infrastructure. Generalized material comparisons should therefore be avoided.
For plastic packaging, collection that is as material-specific as possible and suitable processing are important prerequisites for materials to be reintroduced into recycling processes.
According to the German Environment Agency, a significant proportion of plastic waste in Germany was recovered for energy in 2023. For a stronger material recovery of plastic waste, separate collection, material-specific sorting, suitable sorting processes and subsequent processing are key prerequisites.

Berlin Packaging | Rixius’ C-Program supports this process for selected plastic packaging: suitable materials are collected, consolidated and transferred to a recycling partner for further processing.
Our Approach
With the C-Program, Berlin Packaging | Rixius supports the separate collection and material recovery of selected plastic packaging. The focus is on suitable plastic containers and closures that are collected by participating partners and consolidated at the Mannheim site.
The program was launched in early 2022. In collaboration with selected partners from the business and public sectors, we provide C-Boxes for the collection of suitable plastic packaging. The collected materials are then transferred to a recycling partner for further processing.
There, the materials can be further processed into regranulate, depending on material type, cleanliness, sorting and technical suitability. This regranulate can be used for new plastic applications, depending on quality and requirements.
The use of recyclate can reduce the need for newly produced plastic, provided that recyclate replaces virgin material in the respective application. The specific environmental impact depends, among other factors, on material quality, processing, transport routes, area of application and actual reuse of the material.

-
Support in expanding a regional collection network for suitable plastic containers and closures.
How It Works
For the material recovery of plastic packaging, separate collection, collection that is as material-specific as possible, and suitable processing are essential. Not every plastic packaging item can be recycled without further assessment. Relevant factors include, among others, material type, packaging structure, residual emptying, closure, label and the respective sorting and recovery infrastructure.
Berlin Packaging | Rixius’ C-Program focuses on selected plastic containers and closures that are collected by participating partners. The materials are collected at the respective sites and then consolidated at the Mannheim site.
From there, suitable materials are transferred to a recycling partner for further processing. Whether and to what extent regranulate can be produced from them depends on material type, cleanliness, sorting and technical suitability.
1. C-Boxes
We provide selected partners, including companies and public institutions, with special collection containers known as C-Boxes. These are used at previously agreed collection points in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
2. Collection
Suitable plastic containers and closures are collected. The materials should be emptied of residues, separated by material type as far as possible and reclosed. The collected materials are consolidated at the Berlin Packaging Rixius GmbH company site in Mannheim.
3. Processing
The collected plastics are transferred to a recycling partner company. There, suitable materials can be processed into regranulate, depending on material type, cleanliness, sorting and technical suitability.
Whether and to what extent this regranulate can be used for new plastic packaging or other plastic applications depends on material quality, regulatory requirements and the technical requirements of the respective application.
Participating partners can use the C-Boxes for the separate collection of suitable plastic packaging and receive documentation of the collected material quantities. Statements on potential environmental impacts, energy effects or CO₂ effects require a separate, traceable calculation with clearly defined system boundaries, methodology and comparison basis.
Which Plastics Are Collected?
The C-Program focuses on selected plastic packaging such as bottles, cans, buckets, canisters and drums. The focus is primarily on industrially used packaging made of PP and PE, including HDPE and LDPE. PET beverage bottles are not part of the focus, as they are already collected through existing deposit systems.
Suitability for collection and further processing depends on the respective material, packaging shape, closure, possible labels, residual emptying and sortability. The acceptance criteria of the C-Program are decisive.
What Role Can Recycling Play in Material Use and Emissions Assessment?
When suitable plastic packaging is collected separately and materially recovered, materials can be made usable again. Recyclate can reduce the use of newly produced plastic, provided that it replaces virgin material in the respective application.
Whether this results in energy or CO₂ effects, and to what extent, depends among other factors on material type, sorting, processing, transport routes, production process and area of application.
Specific statements on energy or CO₂ savings should therefore only be used if a substantiated product- or process-specific calculation with clearly defined system boundaries, methodology and comparison basis is available.
Network for a Regional Collection and Recycling Process
The C-Program is implemented together with selected partners from different sectors. The participating companies and organizations support the separate collection of suitable plastic packaging and its transfer to a recycling partner for further processing.
The collaboration makes it possible to collect suitable materials from defined collection streams, consolidate them at the Mannheim site and prepare them for the subsequent processing steps. Whether and to what extent the materials can then be processed into regranulate and used again depends on material type, cleanliness, sorting, technical suitability and the requirements of the respective application.
Participation in the program can be documented on a partner-specific basis, for example through collection points, time periods and recorded material quantities. On this basis, participating partners can present their involvement in the program in a transparent and traceable way.
I am happy to advise you.
