Gemeinsam mit Green Cluster - for a sustainable economy within the region
Anna Schmidt, Managing Director of Green Industry Cluster e.V., is committed to supporting companies in the Rhine-Neckar region on their path to greater sustainability and a circular economy. She answered some interesting questions for us, providing insights into specific funding programs, networks, and support services that companies can use to successfully implement their sustainable projects and future-proof their businesses:
Is there an overview of the specific programs offered by the economic development agency to companies that focus on sustainability and the circular economy?
The City of Mannheim's economic and structural development agency is increasingly offering support to companies that focus on sustainability and the circular economy. Among other things, we provide companies with information from the EU, federal, state, and regional levels. As part of the Green Industry Cluster e.V. initiated by the city,
we promote the implementation of innovation projects, facilitate cooperation through targeted partner matching, and increase the visibility of the industry through trade fair appearances, events, and public relations work. We offer training courses, for example in circular product design, and support company relocations and start-ups, for example through the EXI Green program. In addition, we provide assistance in acquiring funding.
The Green Industry Cluster was founded in collaboration with the economic development agencies of the city of Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar district in order to pursue a regional approach and unite stakeholders beyond the city limits. We also work closely with the Climate Protection Agency's energy efficiency and sustainability network, Local Green Deal Management, and other municipal initiatives. The city generally offers many opportunities where we are happy to establish contacts and provide support.
What best practices or important lessons learned from experience can be passed on to other projects in the circular economy?
From our experience with companies in the circular economy, we have learned that it is worth taking the first step. First of all, no one has ever regretted addressing this issue—so the first step is to get started. An important factor is exchanging ideas with others who have already gained experience; as this dialogue can provide valuable know-how.
It is also important to find out about the offers and support options available and to make active use of them. It should be borne in mind that the transition to a circular economy cannot be achieved overnight. It is a long-term investment in the future and requires a process of change that takes time.
A fresh look at your own processes and openness to change are crucial. The circular economy should not be seen as just a label—it must be truly lived, which requires genuine commitment and a willingness to fully embrace it.
How can access to local networks in business and science that could be of interest to corporate projects be facilitated? In order to gain access to local networks in business and science, openness to exchange with others is crucial. With Green Industry Cluster e.V., we offer a diverse network from various industries that facilitates connections to both business and science. Through economic development, we specifically connect companies through our clusters and corporate account managers and bring them together with relevant networks in the region according to their needs.
What challenges typically arise when implementing sustainability projects in small and medium-sized enterprises—and how can these be overcome? The biggest challenges when implementing sustainability projects in SMEs are often limited resources, a lack of experience in this area, and the pressure of day-to-day business. To overcome these hurdles, companies can benefit from partnerships and collaborations, take advantage of support programs, and pursue a clear, step-by-step strategy to integrate sustainability into their operations efficiently and for the long term. An important aspect is targeted communication to ensure that all stakeholders in the company are on board. If you have any questions, the economic development agency is happy to help and will provide support within the scope of its capabilities.
How will regional economic development evolve in the future, particularly in the area of circular economy? The future development of regional economic development in the area of circular economy is likely to become increasingly important. In view of the growing scarcity of raw materials and growing environmental awareness, regions will increasingly focus on promoting sustainable and resource-efficient economic practices. The economic development agencies of the Rhine-Neckar district, the city of Heidelberg, and the city of Mannheim have recognized this and are backing Green Industry Cluster e.V. This network will play a central role in advancing future topics in the field of circular economy and green tech. Regional networking will enable these topics to be implemented more effectively.
VWhat does the future hold for regional economic development, particularly in the area of circular economy? Thank you very much for the interesting insights! We look forward to working with you and wish you continued success in promoting innovation and sustainability.
